It was much harder for em to get my stuff together in enough time this time to be able to practice it so it was fluid and short enough T tell the truth I was really hoping I'd cut some time off from when i did it for my roommates. And I did--about 20 seconds worth. --What did I learn? Make a schedule so I have time to get things together and practice. h e visual aid was kind of an added problem, until I figured out what to do. The idea for the attention getter came along pretty quickly, and I knew that I also needed to include some slides of the actual art. It would have been boring and silly of em to get up there and not have any pictures to depict what I was talking about. I went back through my speech and picked out the important points--a poem of Tzara, the urinal, the Mona Lisa--I still needed something however of Picabia's. I was not that familiar with his work before I started this project, but I feel like I picked pieces that were exemplative of the major points in time of the movement.

I really wanted to nail the organization, and I feel as though I accomplished that. I picked a subject that interested me, which is always good. I would really like to work on getting the deminishers--the umms and like's out of my delivery. That may have to begin by getting them out of my daily speech. It is definitely something to be more vigilant about.

I also find it very interesting to see the difference in speeches form one to the next, especially with Becky's. The entire thing was so much clearer this time, structure wise. Structuring really makes a big difference, and I want to be able to continue to have a really solid structure. It will allow me to be more comfortable when I am speaking.

Rhetorical Problems--Informative Speech

The mian rhetorical problems I am having in his speech deal with content and conlcusion.

Within the content, I need to make it shorter. This is definately somthing that is historical in nature, and I do not want to err on the side of it turning into a book report. Dada is really interesting and fun, and I want that to come across. I htink if I have the right mix of viual pictures along with the speech itself I should be pkay. THey are actually going to help me organzie it. One of the comments from my Narrative speech was that the I+3+c was not entires clear and cohesive. I am hoping to fix that in this speech. the Dad movement lends itself to being told in a what came first in time kind of order, and well as location. It splits nicly into three parts and is pretty obvious about it.

The conclusion, however, is givng me trouble once again. I am finisng it diff=icult to sum up a point about the art. In order to solve this I am going to write down anwers to the question:
Why is this important?
Why is this relevant?
Why is this cool?
ANd maybe come up with something to use within my conclusion sentances.

Speeches-Round 1

Altogether I hought the speeches form Monday were successful. They gave me a more confident understanding of what I was supposed to be doing in my speech. one thing I noticed was the subtle structural diffrences that came with delivery. In Shaina's speech, it was very clear to see her Intro, 3 body points and conclusion. It made the speech easy to listen to. In Richard's speech however, the introduction was clear and the story followed. It didn't necesarily fall into three little main categories to the ear, but that actually made it smoother in terms of actually listening. I wasn't sure when it was going to be finished, so I had to keep listening.

One thing I would say everyone needs to work on, including myself, is fidgeting during delivery. It almost becomes more distracting when you are aware of everything it could be, because we talked about it in class. Moving from side to ide I found especially distracting. Being able to go the second day has given me an oppourtunity to learn from my peers, and this is one area I would like to really try to avoid during my speech.

Rhetorical Problems

One of the rhetorical problems I have been having with my narrative speech so far is with the subject. I have the idea of waht I want the story to be about, but putting together the actual pieces as a story is becoming a little bit of a challenge. Since it is based off of events and conversations that really happened, I have creative license to fill in the blanks, but in my head it still exists as an ambigious chain of events. I need to flesh out the characters and their dialouge. THis will probably help the story become a story and not just a boring "this is what happened next" thing.

Another problem is in my audience. Because they are my peers, I am unsure how much they know about autism, which i my topic. They are an intelligent audience, and have most likely heard of the disease, but deciding what kind of information to put into it is a fine line. In fact part of the moral of the speech is the fact that people are underinformed about autism, due to many reasons--in the story is because of immigrational-education-cultural hiderances. In my thesis I could give a basic definition, with the symptoms that Kenny, my character exhibits.

And I have yet to really practice and figure out my personal speaker habits for delivery. I know from doing so much in acting class that I talk with my hands and tend to organize my thoughts in a way only clear to myself and then sound like I am rambling. I also use my face too much sometimes, if that sounds true in any way.

Day 1

Hi my name is Colleen Arnold.
I'm a musical theatre major and am glad to be in a class where not everyone is a dominant personality. In this class I hope to become a better writer as well as speaker. I have some bad public speaking memories even with the amount that I have performed in front of an audience. Theatre and public speaking are two completely different things for me. I would also like to learn to speak convincingly without using cliches or anti-cliches that becomes cliche because they are trying so hard not to be.
